A Weekend Getaway at Dapoli

Where would you spend a weekend getaway if you are staying in Mumbai? Chances are you would most likely end up in Lonavala, Alibaug or Pune. Since we have been to those places a number of times in different seasons, we decided to travel a little far than the usual – Dapoli.

Dapoli – a small coastaltown in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, has some beautiful resorts for holidaying. Also known as mini Mahabaleshwar, Dapoli remains cool round the year and is 215 km away from Mumbai.

I was joined by my colleagues – Kaustubh, Nishad, and Aniket – three amazingly talented travel bugs who are always looking forward to packing their bags and just escape somewhere. (Because travelling from Chembur and Virar to Andheri indeed requires a lot of talent :D)

Trip

Though Dapoli is only 215 km away from Mumbai, it takes around 6 hours(including breaks) to reach due to narrow roads and construction on the highway.

Make sure to start your journey early morning so that you reach by the time of check-in. Don’t expect any major restaurant chain on the way as the areas are rural. Choose to stop by at local food joints.

Stay

Dapoli has some beautiful lifestyle resorts with some sporting  views of the place. We chose to stay at Exotica Suvarna Samudra which is slightly away from the town upon a hill.

We were thrilled to be at this Balinese styled villa resort and as requested, we were happy to have a sea facing room. Chilling in the pool is the best thing you can have during summer.

The food was slightly on the disappointing side as it didn’t justify the price. The service was also okay. But overall, it was a pleasant stay.

Food

Being a coastal town, fish is the best thing you can have. Please, do not try anything apart from seafood as you would get disappointed. There are many restaurants to try the food at.

You can also purchase fish and get it made from a local to have their authentic taste.

Sightseeing

Harnai-Murud beach is one of the major attractions of Dapoli. The Harnai port is also one of the places you should definitely visit especially post noon when the fishermen are busy wrapping up their day. A stock of white herons, fishermen pulling out fish on their bullock carts from the boats are some of the common visuals which you wouldn’t want to miss capturing.

The Kanakdurga fort gives a scenic view of the Harnai village.

Summary

Distance from Mumbai – 215 Kms

Places to stay – Villa 270 by Saffronstays, Exotica Suvarna Samudra, The Fern Samali Resort
If you’re bored of visiting Alibaug and Lonavala, Dapoli is not a bad choice. But considering the travel time involved from Mumbai just for the weekend getaway, you might want to skip it.
